Universal semi-finished product for many applications: The T-profile

Along with the L-profile, the T-profile is one of the most common manufacturing forms of long materials. It is characterised by high longitudinal stability, torsional rigidity and versatility.

Structure of a T-profile

The T-profile consists of two flat sheets that are arranged transversely and centrally offset to each other. In the longitudinal section, the "T" that gives the profile its name becomes visible. A T-profile thus has self-stabilising properties. It has stiffness on both sides, but can easily be joined with flat materials or other components.

Manufacture of a T-profile

Due to its offset, the T-profile cannot be manufactured by forming. It is therefore joined or shaped. Welded, riveted or glued T-sections are rare. The usual production methods for the T-profile are extrusion, continuous casting or extrusion. The choice of production method depends on the material and the desired wall thickness. Thin-walled profiles made of plastic are usually extruded or pultruded. Thin-walled T-profiles made of aluminium, copper or brass are produced by extrusion. In this process, a pre-material, usually a round block, is heated on the forming side and pressed through a die at high pressure. In the case of thick-walled T-sections made of steel or aluminium, the material's own weight is sufficient to bring it into the desired shape in the continuous casting process.

Use of T-profiles

T-profiles are extremely versatile. They are used very successfully in the following applications:

  • General construction
  • frames, racks and brackets
  • butt edges
  • load-bearing devices
  • fasteners for thin material and sheet materials

T-profiles are particularly suitable for the production of highly rigid frames, scaffolding and other load-bearing structures. Compared to solid or hollow sections, they require much less material. T-sections are therefore used in construction in places where a low weight is to be combined with high rigidity.

The T-profile is very popular in interior construction. In staircases, it provides a butt edge that effectively protects the edge of the step material against damage and wear. In door frames, T-profiles form a stable but trip-free transition from one floor covering to the next.

Processing T-profiles

T-profiles can be easily drilled, glued or fastened with rivets. Only T-profiles made of suitable materials such as steel, stainless steel or aluminium can be welded. A simple metal saw is sufficient for cutting them to size. Due to their high longitudinal rigidity, T-profiles can only be bent in a desired direction on special machines. Technically, there are very narrow limits to the forming of this profile shape.
