Properties of a C-profile

The C-profile differs from the U-profile in that it has two additional folds. These fold the open webs inwards by 90° so that they face each other. However, a C-profile is always open. The gap between the two opposite edges can be of different widths. C-profiles with back edging are folded inwards one more time. In addition to the strictly symmetrical profiles, this type of long material is also available with adapted and specific shapes.

Types of production for C-profiles

C-profiles are made of plastic or metal. Plastic profiles are generally produced by extrusion. Metal profiles can also be extruded. This manufacturing method is particularly economical for continuous series production. However, if increased demands are placed on the bending stiffness and elasticity of a C-profile, an edging or bending process is more advantageous. For the production of C-profiles made of perforated sheet metal, the edge-bending processes are without alternative.

Metal materials for C-profiles

A metal material that is to be edged into a C-profile must have a suitable toughness and tensile strength. Brittle materials such as cast iron can only be extruded or cast into C-profiles. Rolled sheets, however, can be formed into C-profiles without any problems. The special advantage of this process is that even highly finished materials can be further processed into these profile types. Regardless of whether the semi-finished product is already galvanised, coated or perforated, it can always be formed into a C-profile using the edge bending process. Typical metal materials for C-profiles are as follows:

Use of C-profiles

The C-profile is particularly versatile in its application. With its 5-7 (with back edging) edges, it offers maximum bending stiffness along its length. This means that a C-profile can be stretched over long distances without sagging. Typical applications for C-profiles are as follows:

  • Cable ducts
  • Edge protection for pressboard or wooden panels
  • Support for panel materials
  • Roller and hanging rails
  • Impact protection and guide rails
  • Construction profiles

Processing of C-profiles

The processing of a C-profile depends on its material. Uncoated profiles can be welded without any problems. For coated profiles, screwed, riveted or glued joints are best suited.
